Filmography

We have selected a sample of ethnographic or documentary films and two movies that display a variety of approaches towards Banaras. Furthermore, the Library of the South Asia Institute in Heidelberg houses a collection of VHS tapes, that contain recordings of telecasts.

    Robert Gardner's Forest of Bliss is probably the most well-known and sometimes controversially discussed ethnographic film on death and dying in Banaras.
  • Shiva's Places – Shiva's Orte
    Niels Gutschow / Schüttorf: Hess, 2006
    Niels Gutschow's Shiva's Places focusses exclusively on the aesthetic dimension of rituals performed in temples of Banaras that are of special importance.
  • Boatman
    Gianfranco Rosi / USA/Italien, 1993
    Gianfranco Rosi's ”Boatman” unfolds on the Ganges, on the boat of Gopal, the boatman, who becomes the narrator and protagonist of the film.
  • Ganges: River to Heaven
    Gayle Ferraro / USA: Aerial Productions, 2003.
    Gayle Ferraro focusses in her ”Ganges: River to Heaven” on a hospice for the dying and on the Ghats of Banaras.
